About Us

Conwy Butterfly Jungle is nestled in between picturesque Bodlondeb Park and Bodlondeb Woods, and is only a few minutes walk from the historic walled town of Conwy. We have been established for 18 years and is well reputed for having one of the most spectacular displays of tropical butterflies in the UK. We truly enjoy our work, and are happy to share our knowledge.

The butterflies are free-flying in a natural setting of nectar-providing and ornamental plants. The rainforest atmosphere is aided by temperatures between 25 - 30 degrees C and jungle sounds. Other animals of interest are Chinese Water Dragons, Maclay's Spectre Stick Insects and seed-eating finches. The friendly staff are happy to share their information on the butterflies and their environment.

Your ticket to the Butterfly Jungle is valid throughout the day, and enables you to wander around Conwy and return later that day. There is a picnic area outside of the jungle. Hot and cold drinks and refreshments are available. A small shop offers affordable gifts. There is access and parking for the disabled adjacent to the premises.

The Beginnings to Now

The mother of Geoff Sharrock, Clare Sharrock, was working at Liverpool University for some years on a part time basis assisting in the work of two professors in the genetics and haematology department, where they were using tropical butterflies as a research base in the study of congenital (children's) diseases and in particular, the rhesus negative syndrome or 'blue baby' as it was known. After 13 years of research work, a drug was introduced in 1971 to help prevent this problem. So, in short, tropical butterflies have played an immensely important role in human medicine. Clare Sharrock began to take her work home and over the years became very knowledgeable ( and advised the respected Butterfly House pioneers).

In May 1988, Geoff Sharrock opened the doors of Conwy Butterfly Jungle and worked long hours and full weeks for 17 years, his outgoing personality and good humour is missed by staff & visitors. He now spends much of his time on his passion, working on the steam engine Princess Elizabeth.

The current proprietor (since September 2005), Samantha Humberstone, started work at the Jungle in 2002, she was immediately entranced. Geoff knowing Samantha's love of the place, asked her if she would be interested in continuing the business...
